KC Film Fest - Louis Sullivan: The Struggle for American Architecture

Join KCMODERN in supporting the Kansas City FilmFest by attending a new film about one of America's best Architects, Louis Sullivan. Frank Lloyd Wright, who worked in Sullivan's office, referred to Louis Sullivan as "Leiber Meister" or "My Master." A small group of KCMODERN folks will be be gathering in the lobby before the movie. Be sure to buy tickets in advance.

Louis Sullivan: The Struggle for American Architecture
a film by Mark Richard Smith

“In the Gilded Age, one architect’s vision of freedom and the American landscape brought him success, failure, and an unforgettable place in history”For anyone interested in historic architecture, don’t miss this opportunity to see the new feature-length documentary on one of America’s greatest builders, Louis Sullivan (1856-1924) at the Kansas City Film Festival April 15 and 18. This tribute to architect Louis Sullivan tells a sweeping story with a wealth of visual detail. The rise and fall of Sullivan’s career originates with the 1871 Chicago fire, which made the city a blank slate for ambitious architects. In the late 1800s, Sullivan, who had made his way west after a rigorous École des Beaux-Arts education, created an authentically American architecture at a time when most buildings aspired only to knock off European styles. His commitment to originality led him first to the pinnacle of success with notable early skyscrapers and later to a swift decline due to changing customer tastes and an economic depression. Though his late-career “jewel box” banks were a triumph, Sullivan died penniless. Sullivan’s extraordinary ornamental designs set him apart as an artist. According to Frank Lloyd Wright, who was Sullivan’s chief draftsman for seven years, Sullivan “could draw as beautifully as he could think.

The film will be offered at two screenings:
Thursday, April 15 at 4:30 pm
Sunday, April 18 at 3:00 pm

Where: 2010 Kansas City FilmFest AMC Main Street (1400 Main St., Downtown Kansas City)

MAD MEN Season 3 Premieres August 16

MAD MEN Season 3 Premieres August 16, 2009 atCheck Spelling 9:00 PM central time.

As we have mentioned before KCMODERN loves AMC's television series MAD MEN. If you have not been following the show centered around a stylish 1960's Madison Avenue Ad Agency, you still have time to rent the first two seasons. Or clear some disc space and set your DVR to record 13 hours of back to back episodes of Season 2 on August 10 starting at 6:00 AM central.

Warning: This show is highly addictive, especially for those with Mid-Century Modern tendencies.

MAD MEN YOURSELF Robert

I could not resist posting my own Mad Men caricature!

Here I am with the whole cast of Mad Men.

Here I am hitting on the secretary pool. The buxom redhead is Joan and who could forget Peggy the girl next door type.
And sharing an evening drink with Don Draper.

Frank Lloyd Wright Book, "The Women" by T.C. Boyle, Reviewed by Ward Sutton in "Daddy Frank and the Curse of Sex"

There seems to be a rush of Frank Lloyd Wright books lately. And then there is the rumor of an option to produce a feature length movie. Who should we hire to play Mr. Wright himself?

The latest book is The Women by T.C. Boyle. Barnes and Noble chose to promote the book with an interview, review and hiring cartoonist and illustrator, Ward Sutton to give his take on the book with a graphic novelette, "Daddy Frank and the Curse of Sex".
Click Here for the Slide Show.

Ward Sutton’s cartoons and illustrations have appeared in the Village Voice, TV Guide, Rolling Stone, Time, Esquire, The New Yorker, and on the Op-Ed page of the New York Times.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Do You Remember...the first time you saw the movie, "The Day The Earth Stood Still"? I sure do...I watched it on our black and white television, in the living room of our house in Tulsa, OK, the winter of 1960. "We have come to visit you in peace and goodwill", said Michael Renne, as Klaatu the alien, in this 1951 science-fiction thriller. It was scary in a strange way, somehow the aliens were more reassuring than the humans... We went to the Leawood Theatre, in Ranchmart Shopping Center, the other day to see "Marley and Me".(Don't go see this movie unless you love to cry. As a pet owner, I thought "Old Yeller" was bad, this movie takes the cake)
Inside the refreshment area of the theatre was the owner, Wade Williams' collection of memorabilia from the movie, "The Day the Earth Stood Still", and standing behind velvet ropes was Gort himself... ...The alien's huge, silent but deadly robot He hardly did anything the whole movie but stand like a sentinel, and it still scared the heck out of me. I must say it was cool when he melted the soldiers' weapons with his ray-beam.
I grabbed the camera and here is a shot of Gort and one original of many posters used for marketing the show. The poster is mounted in a wall frame and some of the frame obscures the edges. Interestingly, on the poster the studio depicted Gort like King Kong, carrying away Patricia Neal who was conveniently attired in lingerie...there is no scene like that in the movie...
Gort! Klaatu Barada Nikto!

KCMODERN Loves Mad Men

Just in case you have been too busy working on your Modern house to watch TV, we thought that we should tell you about one of the hippest and cool shows on TV. The second season of AMC's Mad Men features some of the best Mid-century Modern goodness that we have seen on the little screen (although our little screen ain't so small anymore).

The first season of Mad Men was set in the 1960 world of a Madison Avenue Advertising Agency. Season two has fast forwarded to 1962 and has extended its luscious set dressing beyond New York to locations such as Palm Springs. While it took me a few episodes at the beginning of season one to warm up to the characters and the story line, the sets and the fashions are what kept me coming back every week.

The show has not escaped acclaim outside the world of mid-century modern lovers either, with its 6 Emmys, including outstanding drama series for season one. If you missed season one it is available on DVD.

The season two premiere episode is available online for free here.

KCMODERN's Charles Phoenix Show a Huge Success

KCMODERN's "The United States of Charles Phoenix" show was huge success by all accounts. Over 200 people crowded beneath the wing of the Lockheed Constellation to enjoy CharlesPhoenix's retro vacation slide show. We made a lot of new Modern friends that evening because well over half the crowd was made up of people who had never been to a KCMODERN event before. Charles putting his spin on local Kansas City Landmarks like the White Haven Motor Lodge, Town Topic, Fritz's, Villa Capri and Johnny's Space Age Doughnuts was a first, one of a kind show for him and it was my favorite part of the show. The TWA Clipped Wings Stewardess fashion show was great to see. Can you believe some of the women can still wear their original uniforms from the '60s?

At intermission some people chose to tour the interior of the Lockheed Constellation and everyone enjoyed hand-crafted root beer supplied by 75th Street Brewery and three kinds of popcorn from Velvet Creme Popcorn. KCMODERN was proud to offer these local treats. When Charles went into his vintage retro vacation slideshow the audience was mesmerized by his delightful commentary and unusual, sometimes campy slides. It really was “the classic living room slide show supercharged.” I, for one, hope that we can bring him back next year to perform another show, The Charles Phoenix Christmas Jubilee!

A special thanks go out to our event sponsors, Bob Myers Properties, Bob Greenspan Photography, Retro Inferno and Michael Q. Gratz of Pulaski Bank. And thanks to all of you who attended!
